So after having rolling these ideas around in my head for a good number of years I (and my colleagues) are finally putting the flag in the ground. Platform Design is an idea, worth considering and scrutinizing. What is platformdesign.org?
It’s a place to codify a number of ideas that industry and private craftsmen have been doing for many many years. Creating an object for others to continue to create with. For one person or group to design something while solving all the basic needs and functions of that object but with the intent to give this object to another designer/author so that person can express themselves with the object.
Sounds a bit complex well, that’s why this site is here. To clarify, think through, debate and illuminate what it is to make platform design. And I’m sure I’ll end up rewriting this article many times :)
Industry as been doing this for years, cars look and function differently but share chassises and many of their parts. This is a kind of platform design, but it’s closed, not anyone can take advantage of it. Platform design is really about making ‘the platform’ available to everyone that has a vision especially the normal person on the street, for good or bad, ugly or beautiful.
Platform design should stimulate a much more diverse word.
