Presentation given at the 2006 TED conference
Neil Gershenfeld is the leading expert in the field of digital manufacturing and personal manufacturing. He heads the Center for bits and atoms at MIT and does research in physics, quantum computing, nanotechnology and manufacturing. He’s famed for creating a course that teaches “how to make (almost) anything”.
After leaving my naive ideas that I was the only person out there wanting person manufacturing Neil Gershenfeld became my guiding light on this subject. Yes there are many others, most of which have relations with MIT media lab but Gershenfeld captures my imagination every time.
I think the reason I find him so inspiring is that he speak as if you too knew all about quantum mechanics, computer science, history, sociology and business theory. I like people that just speak to assuming your very intelligent.
If you’re rusty when it comes to quantum computing and nanotechnology then the below video should give a basic overview of this theories.

While what we here at platform design are working with is a baby step toward personal manufacturing we’re well and gone devotees to the Center for Bits and Atoms vision of the world.
