Project Chaboo is the brainchild of Ken Tomita. He wanted to create tighter bonds between the creative community and Chaboo became his vehicle to this. Encouraging artists and designers to customize the bench into their own vision.
In some case the artists were given a Chaboo and then they altered it to fit their ideas. But in some cased the collaborator took on the task of building one from scratch using a variety of materials and techniques.
While this is not exactly platform design, it’s probably the closest thing we’ve seen in the furniture industry. We love how when given a task designers tend to push the boundaries as much as they can. In the case of the Chaboo, they changed the design and used a huge variety of materials well beyond the archetype provided. But this is where the magic is. I’m sure that Ken could not have envisioned all of the creations his project have created. The some being greater than the individual.
