I’m very happy to present here an inspiring lecture by William McDonough about design as tool to bring humanity and nature back into balance. He makes a very convincing argument for designer to proactively engage rather than condemn industry.

This approach to sustainable design and product/service development is unique in that it neither turns a blind eye nor embraces industry. Instead it engaging industry on it own terms and is desirable by it’s own merits, and therefor set’s the context.

For a company just starting out I feel this is the only way to go. Most large organizations have systems and capital invested in unsustainable practices while new companies can start fresh. We would like to see all designers working with platform design to work in this manner with these goals.

We know of one company doing PD with these practices, when they launch their first product, we’ll give you an inside look at how it went.
